I have nothing to hide

I have nothing to hide.  That is what most people say. The hear storied of Google copying everyone’s location and contacts and they are unfazed.  This is because most people say they have done nothing wrong.  They don’t mind if the NSA or other government agency is spying on them, they have done nothing wrong.  I used to think that.  I used to think that I was obeying the law, so who cares if I am watched.  My life is boring, I thought.  Then I came against Alameda County.  Actually my church came against Alameda County’s Assessor’s office.  Our church was doing everything that every other church was doing.  I had told the assessor’s office everything we were doing and they approved.  Then the government changed the law.  I was still doing the same thing, but activities that were legal last year are no longer legal.  Alameda County changed the law and did not tell anybody.  Now my church is being taxed and fined for things that used to be legal.  Things like weddings and quinceaneras.  We can no longer do any fundraising for new carpet or missionary work.  We cannot host pastor meetings or ministry meetings for our denomination.

We did not change, the government did.  This is why saying that you are doing nothing wrong is such a bad idea.  What you are doing may be legal today, but what about tomorrow.  As California becomes more and more Socialist, things that people thought were normal and everyone did them are not illegal and people pay the price.

The most insidious part is that the county did not announce the rule change and give time for everyone to adapt.  Instead, they quietly changed the rules 2 years ago, now our church must pay back taxes to 2016, and if we cannot pay, we go out of business.

Call up 25 churches in Alameda County and ask them if the county has outlawed weddings.  Everyone will say they haven’t but they have.  Having a wedding in a church will remove the tax exemption for the entire year.

So, you may not be doing anything wrong and you may not think you have anything to hide, but when the laws change and no one tells you, the government will have all the information they need to arrest you.

Remembering the Franklin Day Planner

This week I have been rereading Hyrum Smith's book "The 10 Natural Laws of Productivity and Happiness." This book was written in the late 1980s and I remember reading it for the first time when I was working at Seagate Technologies, after my time in the Air Force. The core tool talked about in the book is the Franklin Day Planner . I remembering having one such planner, long before smart phones and Palm devices. Mine was a leather bound loose-leaf binder with calendar and note pages in it. I kept my daily tasks list and appointments in that binder, which became a record of my work history at Seagate and beyond. The Day Planner binders, pages and supplies were sold at a store called Franklin Quest , which was located at Valco Mall in Sunnyvale. At that time, I was a computer programmer. I was able to keep a record of all request for software, who made the request and when and what the requirements were. It seemed that I was the only one keeping a record of this b...

Thoughts on Vacation

Over Memorial Day weekend, my wife and I went to the north coast of Washington State, the northern most border of America. The weather was sunny. Cold at night and sunny during the day. Even in May, the days were long with many more hours of sunlight than down in the San Francisco Bay Area. We wanted to visit cousins and see their new place. It was a great time away and a wonderful time of seeing new things. I had never been that far north while still in the lower 48 states. I was stationed in Alaska in the Air Force, so that is the farthest north I have been Vacation is good and a vacation where I get away from everything I know is better. This was a good vacation because it was in a new town with people I know and love. It was good because I knew people could and would handle the business of the church while I was away. A had a good filling and appreciate Kreig Sartin for preaching and Village Baptist for lending him to us. Vacation is usually about escape. The busine...
