Thoughts on Confidence in God

Some people are considered prayer warriors.  Other seems to always be speaking of the great things God is doing, while others just wonder what God is doing.  Others seem so frazzled and disconnected that they don’t seem to have any relationship with God.

As we read through the Psalms, David seems to have great confidence in God.  He asks great things of God and we know from the rest of Scripture that David was the King of Israel, and Jews today consider him the greatest king of Israel.  God picked David’s throne to be the eternal throne of Jesus and everywhere you look, even with David’s sin, David was confident in God and God blessed him.

There are many reasons for David’s attitude and they are reflected in the Psalms.  The foundation of David’s relationship with God is that David acted righteously, kept righteous people around him and tried to be obedient.  Today there seems to be the belief that once people are saved by grace, they are done.  They can now live anyway they want and they end up with no relationship with God.  This is why 92% of Americans say they believe in god, but less than 50% of Americans would claim to have any sort of relationship with God.

David loved God’s Law.  This would primarily be the book of Deuteronomy for him.  He read it, he had it read to him.  Deuteronomy 17:18-20 was part of the Law given to Moses by God.  Long before Israel had a king, God made this rule for the kings.  They were supposed to hand copy the first five books of the Bible, have their copy approved by the priests, then carry with with them and read it.  It was their personal copy of the Law that they could read and learn from.  Tradition holds that David was the last king to do that.  David loved the Law.

So if someone wants confidence in God, I think the first thing they need to do is work on their obedience.  Read the Gospels, read the Epistles and see how God wants people to live and start living that way.  Study the Bible, pray often and get involved in a church.  I have been told that none of these things matter, usually by people who have no relationship with God.  God gave us the Bible to understand Him and our lives with Him.  God setup prayer to communicate with His people and Christ calls the church his bride, he says he loves the church and he died for the church.

Anybody who has no confidence in God or who does not care if they have confidence in God need to check themselves.  Check their involvement with the Bible, prayer and church.  Confidence will come to those who believe what God wants them to believe and who participate in the life that Christ has setup with his death and resurrection and the Holy Spirit.

Thoughts on “agnostic”

Prior to being a pastor I was a believer in Jesus Christ.  I was raised in church and sought out a church every Sunday no matter where I was.  In other words, I consider myself a true believer in Jesus Christ and the Christian religion.  I am an exception in today’s society.  People who are willing to stand up and state that they are basing their lives on the teaching of Jesus Christ is rare. Many years ago, when I was a computer programmer, I worked with all sorts of people.  Buddhists and Hindus and even some Christians.  Most of the tech crowd were what I would call “casual atheists.”  This means that they never gave church or the Bible a second thought.  They go through life and never think about God.  If asked, many would say they believe in God, probably because they were taken to church as a child.  But any definition of this God could not be given by most of these people. One person I meant actually called himself an agnostic .  Agnostic is a Greek word which literally mean
