Thoughts on “Buying Time”

Some time ago, I heard someone say that the best purchase for anyone today is to buy time. At first that seemed a bit odd and I was not sure how to do that.  I did some research and the idea of buying time means to buy something that frees up time or gives some time back.  An example would be a clothes washer and drying that are in the home.  It frees up time from going to the laundromat and standing watch over clothes.  A dishwasher frees up time from doing dishes by hand.

In response to this line of thinking, we noticed that Roomba, robot vacuums were on deep discount for Cyber Monday.  We looked into that brand and other brands and finally settled on getting a Roomba.

Our reasoning was this:  The vacuum that our family has owned and used for decades is a Kirby.  Kirbys are workhorse vacuums and when a house is mostly carpeted, they work great.  When we upgraded our house to hardwood floors, the Kirby became a hassle.  It has a great hardwood floor attachment, but to disassemble the vacuum and attach the hose and the hardwood attachment was time consuming.  With the increase in work schedules, vacuuming was becoming less and less frequent.  Our solution was to buy some time and get a Roomba.

The Roomba is an actual intelligent robot.  It took two days to learn the basic layout of the house, bumping into everything.  Now it scoots around, avoiding walls and permanent furniture.  It has learned that the dining room is a fluid area so it moves cautiously among the chairs.  I get notifications on my phone when the bin is full or if it is stuck or when it is done.  I can set calendar days and times for it to clean and then I let it go.

We don’t even think about vacuuming anymore.  We bought a hand-held dirt-devil vacuum to get the hard to reach places.  Roomba is round and 12” across so it cannot get in the small space next to the refrigerator, so we handle that.  Roomba does great on hardwood flood and goes into a different mode that can be heard when it gets on one of our rugs.  It will automatically return to the charging station and plug itself in when it needs a charge.  It takes four hours for this machine to vacuum our entire house, with a break in the middle to recharge.   Our cats are getting used to it, but still give it a wide space, while keeping an eye on it.

Automation, like the Roomba is a single purpose robot what frees up humans from one mundane task.  Like the clothes washer and dryer and the dishwasher and the automobile, some machines can actually help.  Figuring out what machines can help and getting them is actually buying time.

Thoughts on the 2017 iPhones

Apple released the iPhone 8 a week or so ago.  Apple will release the iPhone X on November 3, 2017.  This is part of Apple’s current annual release of updated phones with better screens, more battery life and a better processor.  I bought my iPhone 7 plus on release day in September of 2016.  I went to the Apple store and bought it.  When thinking about whether I need to update my phone this year, I need to consider a few things. First, is my phone functional or did I break it?  My phone is in good working order.  The screen is not cracked, the non-existent home button still works.  Volume and power and silent switches work.  Mechanically the phone is in good shape.  It took the IOS 11 and IOS 11.01 updates without a problem. The next question is this:  what do I use my phone for and will a faster phone with a better screen help me do these things? Podcasts:  I listen to many podcasts on my phone.  I listen to a mix ...

Thoughts on Father Brown

There is a show on the BBC that is on American Netflix called Father Brown.  It takes place in 1955 in England, so World War II is still fresh in their minds.  Father brown was in the infantry in  World War I, then became a priest and was a chaplain in World War II.  Now he is an overweight, blading, gentle priest in a small British town. The humor of each episode is that when a crime occurs, the police are notified and Father Brown is usually already there for some other reason.  So Father brown gets involved.  The police jump to conclusions, arrest the wrong person and Father Brown, amateur sleuth, pokes around and figures out the truth and the police look foolish. Once he was arrested for obstruction of justice, during his time in the jail, he figured out who sabotaged the town race and solved the crime.  The district police gave him a commendation, so now the local police tolerate him better. In this show, having a priest as a main character ...

Thoughts on God Speaking

God speaks.  Not often, in an audible voice from the sky, but he does speak.  In the Bible he spoke with a voice, he showed pictures and visions and dreams to people.  Today people speak of impressions in their spirit or mind, which was not talked about in the Bible. Today, I believe that people claim God speaks much more than he does.  The primary reason I say this is that God does not need to speak at all.  God has said all that is needed in his Word, the Bible.  We have everything that is required for life and godliness in the pages of our Bibles.  Bibles are not hard to get, except in anti-God countries, yet we still manage to smuggle them into every country and people group.   For those that claim God is a veritable chatterbox I have to wonder what value that brings to their life.  People who claim to hear God’s voice all the time do not seem to have greater biblical understanding.  In fact, people who hear God’s voice all ...
