Psalm 1 is a wisdom Psalm which means it gives actions to perform to be godly and obedient. As Psalm 1 opens, in verse 1 the Psalm states that the blessed man avoids three things. This Psalm is not just for men, it is just the way they wrote. This Psalm could start: To be a successful Christian….
First, don’t listen to bad advice. Bad advice is worldly advice or sinful advice. Someone who tells you that reading the Bible is a waste of time is giving you bad advice. Christians need to find godly sources for advice. Church is a great place for that. All advice must be weighed with Scripture.
Second, don’t hang out with wicked people. Wicked people might entice you to go fishing instead of church. That is wicked and sinful. Don’t choose friends who focus on selfish ambition and wicked pursuits. Once again, church has good people who are willing to be your friend.
Third, don’t sit with the scoffers. Selfish and wicked people love to sit and cut people down. Calling people stupid or ugly, even in their minds, is a sin. We see scoffing and mocking all over the place on TV and social media. Name calling and personal attacks are the norm and disguise it as intelligent advice. It is nothing but sinful scoffing and needs to be avoided. Sitting and calling a politician on TV "stupid" is a sin.
Christians can become better at avoiding these situations by staying in their Bible. Psalm 1 says that righteous people delight in the Law. Christians are not under the Law, however, we can and need to delight in the Bible, the Word of God. We need to read it, study it, gain enjoyment from it and be satisfied with it. We need to let God speak into our hearts and into our minds. We also need to be in our Bible more often than just Sunday. Personal reading and personal study are vital for Christian growth.
Then the Psalm says that we will be like the might redwood tree. A tree planted by the water. An established tree with ample water can withstand any adversity. The wind can come, even earthquakes and they will remain. We can be like those mighty redwoods. The Bible is the water. The more we study and know God, they more adversity we can overcome. Life has a different perspective when we get our eyes off our stuff and onto God. Plant yourself in God's word and be strong.
Then the Psalm talks about the wicked. The wicked are like chaff, which blows away and is never seen again. The plans of the wicked the works of the selfish and the friends of evil people never amount to anything. Like worthless weeds, they are thrown in the fire.
The Psalm closes by stating that God sees you and your work. There is no need to advertise or beg God to notice. He knows what is going on and he knows your heart. He also knows the wicked people and they will perish.
