Thoughts on Prosperity

Psalm 1:3 says that people who have the right kind of friends and who delight in the Bible will stand strong like a tree planted near the water.  Verse 3 ends by saying that “in all that he does, he prospers.”  Prosperity is one of those works that has changed through the centuries.  Back in the time of David, if you asked someone what it means to prosper, they would say something about their crops coming up in time and with a great enough quantity to feed their family.  They might say that it means healthy, hard working children and lots of them.  Today, if you ask someone what it means to prosper, 100% of them would say “money.”

This is because we live in a time of bountiful resources.  A person can actually get whatever they want, if they have enough money.  Their standard of living, type of home and car they own and what food they eat is not dependent on anything but cash.

Many corrupt preachers have taken this verse and the other parts of scripture that talk about prosperity and say that Christ died on the cross to make people rich.  They would never say it that plainly, but that is the core of the prosperity teachers and preachers.  Being a Christian is all about money.  If a person claims to be a Christian and seeks after money, loving money, they are not saved.  I have heard it said that the Bible says more about money than any other book.  That every parable of Jesus was about money.  This is heresy.

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus himself said that a person cannot serve God and money.  Money is the god of the world system.  A person cannot be saved and serve or seek after money above all.

Paul in writing to Timothy, a pastor, wrote in 1 Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.  Paul did not write that the to Corinthians or the Galatians, but to a pastor.  Additionally, someone wrote in Hebrews 13:5 to keep yourself from the love of money.

Loving money is a sin and evil.  To reduce the blessings of God through Christ to a large bank account is blasphemy.  Jesus taught and talked about the kingdom of God, about godly behavior, and walking in the Spirit, not about money.  In Matthew 19:24, Jesus says that it is easier for a real live camel to go through the eye of a sewing needle than a rich person to be saved.  Riches build a spiritual wall between people and God.

There are many, many ways a Christian can prosper in the presence of God that has nothing to do with money.  To reduce the Christian life to a piggy bank is the highest form of evil.  Learn to spiritually prosper, to prosper in the  spiritual life, walking in the Spirit.

Thoughts on “agnostic”

Prior to being a pastor I was a believer in Jesus Christ.  I was raised in church and sought out a church every Sunday no matter where I was.  In other words, I consider myself a true believer in Jesus Christ and the Christian religion.  I am an exception in today’s society.  People who are willing to stand up and state that they are basing their lives on the teaching of Jesus Christ is rare. Many years ago, when I was a computer programmer, I worked with all sorts of people.  Buddhists and Hindus and even some Christians.  Most of the tech crowd were what I would call “casual atheists.”  This means that they never gave church or the Bible a second thought.  They go through life and never think about God.  If asked, many would say they believe in God, probably because they were taken to church as a child.  But any definition of this God could not be given by most of these people. One person I meant actually called himself an agnostic...
