Thoughts on being busy

Someone in our church accidentally took some keys home and apologized and said they would bring them right back.  That was three weeks ago.  When I ask them where the keys were, they tell me that they are so busy.  My response was “so what, give me my keys.”

Being busy is a choice.  Everyone has the same 24 hours.  Until someone invents a time machine, we are stuck in time and we all have the same amount of it.  Daylight changes with the seasons and map location, but with artificial lighting we can work 24 hours straight if we want.  So when a person says they are busy, it means they they, not someone else, have chosen to do more than there is time for.  When I was in the military, I was told to do more than there was time for, and I was told it built character.  Apart from the military or prison, people are free to choose what fills their day, and if they are too busy to do the right thing or to meet with someone, then they are out of control and chaotic.

Being busy is the excuse of the out of control.  People who are busy all the time have not taken the time to figure out what they should be doing.  Back in the day, I knew a man who was starting three businesses at the same time.  He would never say he was busy.  When I asked to meet with him, he would say that he could not because he had chosen to meet with these investors.  That man was in control of his time.  He may have been crazy to start three businesses, but it was his choice and he knew what he was doing.  He did not blame “being busy.”

So if anyone tells me they are busy, I just walk way.  I do not have time for people who use that excuse.  Busy also masks what they are really doing, which is nothing important, else they would say they are going to the doctor or a teachers meeting.  I have written many times on time management and people who are out of control and whose lives are in chaos need time management, but that is not their core problem.  Their core problem is that they do not care about people and let the world buffet them.  the Bible says things about that.  When speaking about wisdom, God says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”  People who are out of control need wisdom, but this person is truly double-minded in everything they do.

Remembering the Franklin Day Planner

This week I have been rereading Hyrum Smith's book "The 10 Natural Laws of Productivity and Happiness." This book was written in the late 1980s and I remember reading it for the first time when I was working at Seagate Technologies, after my time in the Air Force. The core tool talked about in the book is the Franklin Day Planner . I remembering having one such planner, long before smart phones and Palm devices. Mine was a leather bound loose-leaf binder with calendar and note pages in it. I kept my daily tasks list and appointments in that binder, which became a record of my work history at Seagate and beyond. The Day Planner binders, pages and supplies were sold at a store called Franklin Quest , which was located at Valco Mall in Sunnyvale. At that time, I was a computer programmer. I was able to keep a record of all request for software, who made the request and when and what the requirements were. It seemed that I was the only one keeping a record of this b...

Thoughts on Vacation

Over Memorial Day weekend, my wife and I went to the north coast of Washington State, the northern most border of America. The weather was sunny. Cold at night and sunny during the day. Even in May, the days were long with many more hours of sunlight than down in the San Francisco Bay Area. We wanted to visit cousins and see their new place. It was a great time away and a wonderful time of seeing new things. I had never been that far north while still in the lower 48 states. I was stationed in Alaska in the Air Force, so that is the farthest north I have been Vacation is good and a vacation where I get away from everything I know is better. This was a good vacation because it was in a new town with people I know and love. It was good because I knew people could and would handle the business of the church while I was away. A had a good filling and appreciate Kreig Sartin for preaching and Village Baptist for lending him to us. Vacation is usually about escape. The busine...
