Thoughts on Psalm 14

Psalm 14 begins by saying that the fool says in his heart that there is no God.  Psalm 14 is is about the atheist.  Someone who denies God, either theologically or practically, will live a corrupt life.  A theological atheist has determined from a studied position, that God cannot exist or must not exist.  These are few and far between.  Most atheists are practical atheists, which means they live as if there is no God.  This group is much larger.  They are the people, when asked, will say that they believe in God, but there is no evidence of a religious conviction.  In fact these people do not even give a thought to God during their lives, except during times of trouble, like a death in the family or a health crisis.

Psalm 14 says they are corrupt and do abominable deeds.  One question that needs to be asked is, why?  Why would a true believing Christian act differently than an atheist?  If people were basically good and people were their own righteous and just master, then there would be no difference.  However in reality, in the case of a Christian, their sins have been forgiven and atoned for, the righteousness of Christ has been imputed and the Holy Spirit in indwelling.  For the atheist,  the weight of their sin is still on them and in their heart and on their mind and the wrath of God is being revealed against them.  If they want to do good, they must figure out how to do that in their own power and strength.

Psalm 14 says that atheists have no knowledge of what is right or wrong.  They use people and use up people and when they are in a time of need, they do not call upon the name of the Lord.  The atheist is, in every way, totally alone in the universe, trying to figure out how to make a away for themselves that will give them some level of peace and comfort, but they will aways fail.

Christians and atheists are different because Christians have been made alive in Christ and the atheist is still spiritually dead.  The Christian is in the kingdom of life, the kingdom of God and the atheist is in the kingdom of death, satan’s kingdom.

Therefore, I propose, that people are allowed to ask the spiritual condition or religious affiliation before trust can be fully established.  Christians need to seek out Christians for business relationships, political candidates, dating and every other human relationship.  If an atheist is running for office, it needs to be understood that there is corruption in their thinking and evil in their actions.

This is also a test of those who call themselves Christian.  Do they look like one and act like one in real life?  Do they pray and call upon the name of the Lord?  Do they find themselves seeking out and working with corrupt self-serving individuals?  Just because a person calls themselves a Christian and has a religious affiliation, they could be a practical atheist.  When I was young, my youth pastor would say, "If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?"

Wilson.  It is my goal to preach truth and to explain truth to all who attend.   We subscribe to the reformed view of Christianity which includes the  Five Solas , or the five foundational "only" beliefs.   If you are looking for a Christ Centered church, let me recommend  Cornerstone Fellowship

Thoughts on “agnostic”

Prior to being a pastor I was a believer in Jesus Christ.  I was raised in church and sought out a church every Sunday no matter where I was.  In other words, I consider myself a true believer in Jesus Christ and the Christian religion.  I am an exception in today’s society.  People who are willing to stand up and state that they are basing their lives on the teaching of Jesus Christ is rare. Many years ago, when I was a computer programmer, I worked with all sorts of people.  Buddhists and Hindus and even some Christians.  Most of the tech crowd were what I would call “casual atheists.”  This means that they never gave church or the Bible a second thought.  They go through life and never think about God.  If asked, many would say they believe in God, probably because they were taken to church as a child.  But any definition of this God could not be given by most of these people. One person I meant actually called himself an agnostic...
