When President Donald Trump began the process of replacing ObamaCare with TrumpCare, the Democratic leadership began a campaign to discredit this new regulation set. Nancy Pelosi said that Trump’s healthcare would bankrupt families and people would die. Not “people might die” but “people will die.” An elected representative on the State of California accused the president of the United States and the republicans of murder. Their actions will kill people, guaranteed. Now those in DC would just say this is rhetoric, and does not mean anything, but when accusations like that are spread across the globe on international news stations, can we be sure that everyone who hears it knows what she means? When the president is accused of “destroying our democracy” and “brining an end to our nation,” those in DC may chuckle and say that it is meaningless talk, but do all 325,000,000 people in America understand? Have they been given the playbook?
Recently a man shot at republican representatives practicing for the annual capital hill charity softball game. The man who shot at them had a history of watching and listening to conspiracy type rhetoric like Alex Jones and loves to watch the extreme views like Sean Hannity. Both of these shows have and will play clips from government officials saying people will die and since Trump has destroyed America, Trump must be destroyed (an actual quote), and he felt he should do something to help this along. Now, I do understand that this man was crazy and not part of the norm, but how long can elected official use inflammatory and incendiary language and expect the people in the fly over states to do nothing, to ignore them. This would be detrimental if candidates were ignored by most of the United States come election time. So representatives (and I use that term in the history sense, not in the meaningful sense) must say things that their constituents like to hear but they must also get the magic sound bite to get on the evening news and the front page of dying newspapers.
Today we have left policy talk and we now are fully into the hateful rhetoric of ad hominem attacks. If Nancy Pelosi hates the President of the United States and believes he should be destroyed and removed at all costs, what do her constituents believe. Do they like that? Do they subscribe to her hate so much that they will pick up a rifle and start shooting? When politicians move away from policy and actually hate individuals, how are the people of America supposed to react?
We need to return to the day of policy debate, but I doubt if we will. I will vote for the person who will get DC out of healthcare, dismantle the federal department of education and lower taxes, but since that person is not offered to me, I stay out of politics, turn off the news and hope they will all just go away. I am sad that some crazy person shot at unarmed politicians and I hope security is better in the future, but I don’t trust them, I don’t like them and I don’t care if they get reelected or not.
