Thoughts on Exercise

People love studies. They seem to love lists on the internet of the ten most beautiful people or the five worse cities to live in. They also click on those studies about coffee being a health drink and coffee killing people. Another type of study people love are health studies. People are acting for that one study that will tell them which vitamin or exercise or energy drink will cause them to live forever. Of course nothing on this earth can cause anyone to life forever, but people are still looking for it.

Today on the Radio I heard the news that 30 minutes of walking a day can cut your chances of dying from cancer by 50%. It won’t keep you from contracting cancer, but it will help you to stay alive through the treatment. Freakonomics says that people who walk 30 minutes a day are generally more healthy anyway, but it is an interesting bit of news.

I go to the gym or walk 3 miles outside every day. I have an Apple Watch and therefore have the activities app on my phone and watch. At the June 5th WWDC, Apple announced that the most used app on the watch is the activity app. Built into the activities app are three counters. The green counter is a 30 minute counter. There are no settings for this, it just counts 30 minutes of exercise. So this green counter will help keep you live if you get cancer. There is a red counter which counts calories. You can set the target. The blue counter counts how many times you stand up per hour. No setting for this. You want to stand up 12 times during the day to complete this counter. The counters come in the
form of rings or circles and you win if you close all three circles. Badges are given each week and on special occasions if you close your rings. Apple stated that with watchOS4 there will be custom challenges and badges based on your exercise pattern.

So I close all three of my rings every day. When I am on vacation, I will do what I can, but when I am home, I will complete all three counters. My hope is, of course, that I will live a long and healthy life. I know several people who maintained healthy bodies, but their minds deteriorated either through dementia or Alzheimers diseases. I have also known a few whose mind has remained sharp as a tack but their bodies deteriorate so they are bed ridden or pushed around in a wheel chair. Then there are the few who, into their 80s remain sharp of mind and healthy in their body. Of course the body will always deteriorate, but to remain ambulatory, and even drive into my 80s would be a great thing. So I follow the Apple activity system. Of course, if it does not work, there is no do-over and no second chance. So even as I run on the treadmill, my hope is for eternity with Christ and a glorified body what will not ache and will not fall apart. Exercise is not my salvation, just something to do.

Thoughts on Dinosaurs

There is a commercial on TV where there is a flying lizard and a larger flying lizard comes along side.  This is advertising some dinosaur exhibit at some learning center of museum in Northern California.  When we see animations like this, some may think that this is actually what ancient reptile beasts looked like.  When we think of dinosaurs, we need to understand a few things. We have no idea what dinosaurs looked like.  We have no idea what any of them sounded like.  We don’t know what color they were or what texture their skin was (mostly). We have no idea what they ate.   We have no idea if they were friendly and docile or violent and full of rage. We have no idea how they walked, how fast they walked or if any of them flew. We have no idea why we don’t have any dinosaurs on earth anymore. This is because we have never found a dinosaur.  In fact we have only found the spaces where their bones were.  When a dinosaur died, it may have gotten buried.  All the skin and mus
