Church, Christians and Politics

I have always described myself as politically aware but not politically active.  I vote and that is about it.  As for being politically aware, I read a great deal about politics and the political situation in America.  I do not watch much political TV because it takes too much time and is very selective in the stories they cover and the way they cover it.  TV news has become TV opinion and commentary.  Yet there are long form political pieces out there.  I also follow political thinkers on Twitter and Facebook and read what they post.

I am politically aware for two reasons.  People will come to me and ask what I think about a political point of view and I want to be well researched.  Also with the problems my church has had with the IRS and the Alameda County Assessor, I want to know what bills are in the hopper, and which bills Governor Brown and President Trump have signed.  I use IFTTT to get alerts when a new bill is signed in my state or nation.  Then I can review them and know what is coming.

According to the Johnson amendment, Churches could not be political without alerting the IRS.  The one visit we had from the IRS was based on reports from people citing the Johnson amendment.  When President Trump took the teeth out of that legislation, a huge weight was taken off the shoulders of every pastor in America.  I do not think that this means pastors need to bash politicians every Sunday in church, but it does mean that if there is obvious sin it can be addressed in expository preaching.

Christians can be as political as they want as long as it does not detract from their witness and testimony.  The goal of every Christian needs to be bring as many people as possible into the Kingdom of God.  So Christians can fight abortion practices, but when the world sees Christians as hateful bigots and not loving servants, perhaps we can change our tactics.

Above all churches are not political organization (as the world would define that) and Christians are not political operatives (as the world would define that).  I think it would be great if every politician fell on their face before almighty God begging for mercy and confessing their sins.  That is what I pray for.  It is a political prayer but it is also a God centered Kingdom prayer.  I believe Christians can change a country, any country, from within and that needs to be our goal.  We need to know the issues, know what is on the ballots, vote our conscious, while praying about everything.  Pray for candidates.  Pray for congress, the senate and the President and his cabinet.  Pray for their salvation and repentance.  God may actually do something some day with the corrupt governments of the world, or he may just wipe them all out when he returns.

Remembering the Franklin Day Planner

This week I have been rereading Hyrum Smith's book "The 10 Natural Laws of Productivity and Happiness." This book was written in the late 1980s and I remember reading it for the first time when I was working at Seagate Technologies, after my time in the Air Force. The core tool talked about in the book is the Franklin Day Planner . I remembering having one such planner, long before smart phones and Palm devices. Mine was a leather bound loose-leaf binder with calendar and note pages in it. I kept my daily tasks list and appointments in that binder, which became a record of my work history at Seagate and beyond. The Day Planner binders, pages and supplies were sold at a store called Franklin Quest , which was located at Valco Mall in Sunnyvale. At that time, I was a computer programmer. I was able to keep a record of all request for software, who made the request and when and what the requirements were. It seemed that I was the only one keeping a record of this b...

Thoughts on the Gap theory

The Bible is a closed book.  When God was done writing the Old Testament, he stopped until Matthew.  When he wrote Revelation, he stopped.  There are warnings in the Bible about adding or subtracting words from the Bible. Deuteronomy 4:2 & 12:32 and Revelation 22:18 are the three most specific.  The idea throughout the Bible is that this book is inspired Scripture and people have no right or authority to add to them or take away. This is why the Gap theory is so strange.  People probably feel it would be too obvious to add 16 extra chapters to Romans or Ephesians, so they try and sneak some extra stuff into Genesis.  That is the Gap Theory. The Gap Theory says that there is a space of time between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2.  The space that some people insert is a couple of hundred years all the way up to billions of years.  The most popular use for the Gap Theory is to put the entire evolutionary process between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1...

Thoughts on the 2017 iPhones

Apple released the iPhone 8 a week or so ago.  Apple will release the iPhone X on November 3, 2017.  This is part of Apple’s current annual release of updated phones with better screens, more battery life and a better processor.  I bought my iPhone 7 plus on release day in September of 2016.  I went to the Apple store and bought it.  When thinking about whether I need to update my phone this year, I need to consider a few things. First, is my phone functional or did I break it?  My phone is in good working order.  The screen is not cracked, the non-existent home button still works.  Volume and power and silent switches work.  Mechanically the phone is in good shape.  It took the IOS 11 and IOS 11.01 updates without a problem. The next question is this:  what do I use my phone for and will a faster phone with a better screen help me do these things? Podcasts:  I listen to many podcasts on my phone.  I listen to a mix ...
